What Is Epoxy Pool Paint?

Epoxy pool paint is a two-part coating system — a resin and hardener that chemically bond when mixed, curing into a hard, non-porous, waterproof barrier on your pool surface. Unlike rubber-based or acrylic pool paints that sit on top and degrade quickly, epoxy penetrates and bonds to the substrate, delivering dramatically longer service life and superior resistance to pool chemicals, UV, and automatic cleaning equipment.

ArmorGarage Epoxy Pool Paint

Bonds to concrete, gunite, plaster & fiberglass. Resists chlorine, UV & auto cleaners.
Rubber-Based Pool Paint

Fastest to apply. Shortest lifespan. Peels under chemical exposure.

Two-Part Epoxy Pool Paint
  • Strongest, thickest, most durable formula
  • Bare concrete, gunite, plaster, fiberglass
  • Over existing epoxy in good condition
  • 1:1 mix ratio — easy to measure
  • 8–10 year expected lifespan
One-Part Epoxy Pool Paint
  • Zero solvents — required for chlorinated rubber
  • Also works on all bare surfaces
  • Simpler single-component application
  • Good when solvent-free formula needed
  • Strong durability — not as thick as two-part

How to test for chlorinated rubber: Soak a rag in acetone and rub a spot in your pool for 30–40 seconds. If the surface becomes soft and sticky, it’s chlorinated rubber — use the one-part formula. If not, use the two-part for maximum durability. Still unsure? Call 866-532-3979.

Applying ArmorGarage epoxy pool paint with a roller on concrete pool surface

Before & After: A clean, bright new pool coating is more than just cosmetic — it’s a necessity to prevent damage to your underlying substrate. Pool chemicals getting through old, worn coating can cause serious damage, creating very costly repairs. ArmorGarage epoxy pool paint creates a tough, non-porous barrier that protects against water penetration, pool chemicals, and the wear caused by continuous use. Click the image to zoom in.

Pool Deck Coatings

For the pool deck areas surrounding your pool, ArmorGarage offers two fantastic products: Surface Bond and ArmorTrak Butyl Rubber Epoxy. Both provide superior adhesion, traction, durability, and heat reflection. They can be applied over concrete or tiles (bonding primer required for porcelain or ceramic tiles).

Easy to install with no prior experience needed. Anyone who can use a roller can apply these products. Both products provide superior traction and durability compared to stains, sealers, and cool-coats, lasting a decade or more.

Epoxy Pool Paint FAQ

How long does epoxy pool paint last?

ArmorGarage two-part epoxy pool paint lasts 8–10 years under normal pool conditions — compared to 2–3 years for rubber-based pool paints and 1–2 years for acrylic formulas. Lifespan depends on pool usage, chemical maintenance, and surface prep quality before application.

How many coats of epoxy pool paint do I need?

Two coats are required for best results. Apply the first coat, allow to cure fully, then apply the second coat. On heavily pitted or textured surfaces, a third coat may be needed to achieve full coverage and a smooth finish.

Can epoxy pool paint go over chlorinated rubber paint?

The two-part epoxy cannot go over chlorinated rubber — the solvents will cause adhesion failure. Use the acetone test to identify chlorinated rubber (soft and sticky after 30–40 seconds of rubbing). If confirmed, use the one-part solvent-free epoxy pool paint instead.

Can I apply epoxy pool paint over existing epoxy?

Yes — the two-part epoxy can be applied over existing epoxy pool paint that is in good condition (no peeling, blistering, or delamination). Sand lightly to scuff the surface and remove any chalking, clean thoroughly, then apply. Call us if you're unsure about the condition of your existing coating.

What surfaces does epoxy pool paint work on?

ArmorGarage epoxy pool paint works on concrete, gunite, plaster, and fiberglass pools. It can also be applied over existing epoxy coatings in good condition. The one-part formula is the correct choice for coating over chlorinated rubber paint or when a solvent-free formula is required.

How long before I can fill my pool after painting?

Allow a minimum of 5–7 days cure time before filling the pool with water. Curing time depends on temperature and humidity — cooler or humid conditions require more time. Do not fill before the surface is fully hard to the touch and passes a thumbnail scratch test.

Does epoxy pool paint work on fiberglass pools?

Yes. ArmorGarage two-part epoxy pool paint bonds to properly prepared fiberglass surfaces. The key is thorough prep — sand the fiberglass surface to create a profile, clean all contaminants including oils and sunscreen residue, and allow to dry completely before applying the first coat.

How much epoxy pool paint do I need?

Coverage depends on pool size and surface texture. Rough or porous surfaces (gunite, unpainted plaster) use more paint than smooth surfaces. Use our pool painting guide or call 866-532-3979 with your pool dimensions and we'll calculate the exact quantity needed including waste factor.
