What is the best epoxy flooring for aircraft hangars?
The best hangar floor epoxy is a multi-layer military-industrial grade system — a primer, a high-build 100% solids epoxy, and a chemically hardened topcoat — rather than a thin residential coating. A hangar floor has to shrug off aviation feul and hydraulic fluid spills, carry aircraft and tug traffic, and keep a high-gloss finish that reflects light for inspections. Can you use garage floor epoxy in a hangar?
No — and this is the most common and expensive mistake in hangar flooring. Garage epoxies are engineered for passenger-car traffic, not for aircraft loads or aviation fluids, and they will not hold up. An aircraft concentrates its weight onto small tire contact patches — far higher point loads than any car — and adds tow tugs, jacks, and dropped tools on top. Some companies sell the same product for garages and hangars alike; the traffic loads are not remotely the same, and the coating must match the load.
How thick should hangar floor epoxy be?
Industrial thickness — not paint-film thickness. ArmorGarage's military-industrial hangar systems build to 25–30 mils across their layers, and the extreme-duty Heavy Tonnage system cures a full 30 mils thick with a finish at the top of the hardness scale. Compare that to thin garage or big-box coatings at a few mils: thickness is what absorbs landing-gear point loads, towbar scrapes, and dropped hardware without wearing through.
Why are hangar floors glossy and light-reflective?
Because on a hangar floor, visibility is a maintenance tool. A high-gloss, light-reflecting finish brightens the workspace, makes fluid leaks show themselves immediately, and makes dropped fasteners and debris easy to spot before they matter. Stain resistant and easy to clean—nothing likes to stick to our topcoats, so maintaining a clean, professional-looking workspace is much easier than with a bare concrete slab. Simple garden hose washdowns keep it looking new.
This floor was done by a first-time user in Charcoal Gray, which is a very rich-looking color. Even though it's a darker color, our super high-gloss finish is still reflective, making the space brighter.
