Epoxy Paint At a Glance
Epoxy paint commonly refers to a two-part coating made from epoxy resin and hardener that chemically cures into a hard, durable surface. Professional floor coating systems may use three separate layers, each performing a different job.
1. Epoxy Primer
Penetrates and bonds to properly prepared concrete to create a strong foundation for the coating system.
2. Epoxy Paint / Base Coat
Provides the primary color, film thickness and much of the impact, chemical and wear resistance.
3. Protective Topcoat
Urethane, polyaspartic, novolac and specialty finishes add abrasion, stain, chemical or UV protection.
How to Choose the Right Epoxy Coating
The right epoxy coating depends on what you are coating, the condition of the surface and the level of traffic, wear or chemical exposure it will receive. Some projects need only one product for a repair or recoat, while complete flooring systems may use a primer, epoxy base coat and protective topcoat together.
Epoxy Primer
Promotes adhesion to properly prepared concrete and other approved substrates. Primers can also improve coverage and provide a strong foundation for the coating layers above.
Epoxy Paint / Base Coat
Provides the primary color, film thickness and protective body of the system. Choose the formulation according to traffic, substrate condition, chemical exposure and required durability.
Protective Topcoat
Adds the final wear surface and can increase abrasion, stain, chemical or UV resistance. The correct topcoat helps protect the epoxy layer beneath it.
Simple way to think about it:
the primer promotes adhesion, the epoxy base coat provides build and protection, and the topcoat takes the wear.
Two-Part Epoxy Paint vs. One-Part Floor Coatings
Product names can be confusing. The important difference is how the coating is formulated and cured. Professional two-part epoxy uses a separate resin and hardener that are mixed immediately before application and chemically cure together.
Typical One-Part Floor Coating
- No separate resin and hardener to mix
- Generally applied in a thinner film
- Designed primarily for lighter-duty applications
- Less flexibility for building multi-layer systems
- Performance depends heavily on the specific formulation

What Determines Epoxy Performance?
Solids content is important, but it is only one part of epoxy performance. Two coatings with similar solids percentages can perform very differently depending on formulation, film thickness, surface preparation and the environment in which they are used.
Surface Preparation
Properly prepared concrete gives the coating the surface profile it needs to bond correctly.
Coating Chemistry
Resin quality, hardener chemistry and the overall formulation influence adhesion, hardness, chemical resistance and working characteristics.
Film Thickness & Coverage
Higher-build coatings can provide a thicker protective layer, but the product still needs to be applied at its specified coverage rate.
Complete System Design
The correct primer, epoxy layer and topcoat should be selected as compatible components based on traffic, chemicals, moisture and UV exposure.
About 100% solids epoxy:
100% solids formulas can build a very thick protective film because little or no solvent evaporates during cure. But solids percentage alone does not determine quality — formulation, surface preparation, film thickness and correct application all matter.
