A Simple Professional Explanation of Epoxy Paints

Epoxy paint is a general catch all phrase for first time users and can be very confusing when you see a multitude of products with different names and descriptions. Here we will keep it very simple to help clear things up. For now just know that the better the quality product you use the better the performance and service life you will get. Below the product listings we go into very detailed explantions of everything you need or want to know about epoxy paints. But for now lets keep it simple and start with breaking down the term epoxy paint into its 3 major parts.

Primers - Epoxy Paint - Topcoats

Primers are epoxy paints that are usually thinned down so that they soak into concrete better than actual thicker epoxy paint. If you just want a budget coating to cover your floor and protect it from pitting and staining a good two part primer is much better than a paint.

Epoxy Paints come in many different forms and can be used directly on concrete or over a primer. In general we recommend avoiding one part epoxies, water based epoxies or less than 100% solids epoxy paints. Again if you're just looking to put a nice looking finish on your floor this is the next step up in protection and appearance from using just a primer.

Topcoats are a type of epoxy paint made with urethane that are applied over a primer and or over an epoxy paint and never are to be applied directly to concrete. They exist as the chemically hardened protective shield against wear and corrosion to you paint or primer.

What Is Epoxy Paint?

Epoxy paint is a two-component resin coating made by combining an epoxy resin with a hardener. Once mixed, the components chemically cure to create a hard, tightly bonded surface that provides substantially greater durability than ordinary floor paint.

Professional epoxy paint is commonly used on concrete floors where adhesion, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and long-term protection are important. Epoxy paint requires proper surface preparation and performance can be enhanced with the use of optional compatible primers and protective top coats to meet any project requirements.

Epoxy paint is not the same as standard paint. Many one-part retail products use “epoxy” as a marketing term. A true two-component epoxy system cures through a chemical reaction between the resin and hardener, producing a thicker and more durable coating.

Choose the Right Epoxy Paint Components

Purchase individual products to build a custom floor coating system, replace a specific layer or supplement materials for a larger project. Each component performs a different function.

Epoxy Primers

Improve adhesion to properly prepared concrete and other approved substrates. Primers can also increase system thickness and improve the coverage of the coating applied over them.

Epoxy Paint and Base Coats

Provide the primary color, build and protective layer. Select the formulation according to traffic, chemical exposure, substrate condition and required performance.

Protective Top Coats

Add the final wear surface and can improve abrasion, stain, chemical or UV resistance. The correct top coat also helps preserve the appearance and service life of the floor.

Not all 100% solids epoxies are made equal! Beware of imported 100% solids epoxies that are not 100% in both volume and weight and or use cheaper quality components. Use high solids epoxies only as primers, never as your actual epoxy base coat.
