The Videos Below Were Made By A Customer Who Goes By The Name DIY DAN. We love thesw videos because it shows you, step by step, how easy it is to do a garage floor epoxy job with Armor Chip or Armor Granite epoxy kits and how to do it properly. We also love the way the floor came out, and the way Dan tells it like it is, about what lessons he learned doing his floor and what he would have done differently.

This is real-world feedback, which will help your job go without a hitch. We'll list some of the things he mentioned, explain the issue, and recommend what to do. Please don't be guided by just what you watch on YouTube. They are often done by pros who've done it hundreds, if not thousands, of times and cut out any mistakes. This was Dan's first time, and he left in all his little mistakes ( he didn't have a budget for professional editing), which is great for you to learn from. Dan also did a one-year follow-up video where he discusses the installation and how the floor has held up a year later.

The following are our comments to help you avoid some of the little issues Dan had.

1. First, whenever ordering epoxy for your floor, we always recommend having at least a 10% safety factor. Every floor is different, and some floors absorb much more than others. Dan's floor was 525 SF, and he only ordered the 1-550 SF kit due to budgetary issues, as he mentions.

2. Dan chose the color black, which is a rich and bold-looking color, but it's also what we call a high-pigment color, meaning it takes much more pigment to get that beautiful, deep black luster. It also means it gets less coverage, as does white and red (red gets the least coverage). Whenever ordering a black, red, or white floor, always use a primer! In fact, our red kits come with a red primer. We won't sell a red floor without a primer. Using a primer helps increase the coverage of the epoxy. Dan should have used a primer for his black floor, but again, due to budget issues, he did not. Had he used a primer, he wouldn't have had any stress about having enough epoxy during the application. He could also have ordered an additional half-size kit as an option for more epoxy, but we feel adding a primer is a better option.

3. Dan had an issue with the squeegee because he was light on coverage, and he was trying to spread the epoxy farther than it was intended to be. The squeegee intentionally does not spread it out paper-thin as a flat windshield-type squeegee does. The squeegee is for initial spreading after you pour out the epoxy in a bead; then use the roller to spread it out. We now supply a Magic Squeegee, which makes it even easier to get the epoxy spread out at the proper thickness.

4.Dan, as he mentions, got impatient and decided to mix a double-size batch of epoxy. As we stated, this is not like typical off-the-shelf epoxy; it's pure military-grade. The more epoxy you mix, the more chemical reaction there is, and the faster it sets; the more it sets, the thicker it gets, and the less it spreads. Follow the instructions and mix 80 ozs of Part A and 40 ozs of Part B for each person rolling.

5. When applying the topcoat, always look at the floor from different angles to spot any missed spots, or have a "Spotter" help you. The topcoat is gin clear, so it's easy to miss a spot. If you find a missed spot after the floor has dried, don't panic. Simply scuff the spot with 120 grit and brush a little of the topcoat on, so don't throw the can away till the next day.

6. Dan did not use the supplied non-slip additive. We always strongly recommend using it! Our nonslip will not dull the finish! Also, before rolling on the topcoat, scrape the flakes to knock them down. You can use a floor scrapper, ice chopper, shovel, or anything with a wide flat blade. Don't worry about scratching the floor; any scratches will disappear with the topcoat.
