Why Wood Deck Paints Keep Peeling

Why Regular Deck Paints Keep Peeling Off

Decks and porches are the most difficult surfaces to keep painted. We receive hundreds of calls every week from frustrated homeowners dealing with the same problem — deck paint that peels off every single year, no matter what brand they use or how carefully they apply it.

Here's why it happens: No matter how much porch and deck enamel you apply, it's impossible to seal wood 100%. Moisture enters from the unpainted underside and through tiny cracks and pinholes in the existing coating. When that trapped moisture tries to evaporate on a hot day or freeze and expand in winter, it pushes right up through the rigid, non-breathing paint film — cracking it open and peeling it off.

This is why conventional deck paints, porch enamels, and even epoxy cannot stay adhered to wood surfaces long-term. They form a rigid film that fights against the wood's natural expansion, contraction, and moisture movement. Repainting with the same type of product only makes the problem worse — producing thicker pieces of paint that peel off even more aggressively.

The other major destroyer is UV exposure. Decks with long sun exposure can have their coatings burned off in a year or less. If your deck faces full sun for most of the day, a high-quality UV-resistant coating applied in at least two coats is essential for maximum longevity.

Armor Renew It — Textured Deck Coating

Armor Renew It is an engineered ultra-high-performance textured coating built with Molecular Adaptive Technology. It penetrates into the wood to achieve superior adhesion while still allowing the wood to breathe — the critical combination that prevents peeling.

A two-coat application cures to a full 1/8" thick — filling in cracks, encapsulating splinters, and creating a super-hard textured finish that handles chair scraping, dropped objects, heavy foot traffic, and harsh weather without damage. This is the product for decks that need serious restoration.

Super Deck Paint — Smooth Finish

Super Deck Paint cannot be compared to typical name-brand or home center porch and deck enamels. Those products form a rigid film that doesn't let wood breathe and cannot handle the extreme expansion and contraction that occurs in wood — making them notorious for peeling off in one season or less.

ArmorGarage Super Deck Paint expands and contracts with temperature changes, protecting your deck with a beautiful, durable smooth finish while letting trapped moisture escape naturally. It's the only way to achieve a long-lasting deck coating that actually stays put.

For decks in full sun: Apply at least two coats on floor boards exposed to direct sunlight for most of the day. This provides maximum UV protection and the longest possible service life.

Works On Pressure-Treated Lumber

Pressure-treated wood is notorious for not holding coatings. The chemicals infused to resist rot also resist most common paints and coatings — a fact home centers won't mention because they'd rather sell you expensive wood and have you repaint every year.

ArmorGarage Super Deck Paint works on pressure-treated wood when used with our Bonding Primer. The primer creates a permanent adhesion bridge between the treated wood and the topcoat, solving the adhesion problem that defeats other products.

Important: New pressure-treated lumber should be allowed to age for at least one full year before coating. This allows the treatment chemicals to stabilize and excess moisture to escape, ensuring proper adhesion.

Proper Deck Preparation For Best Results

Previously painted decks: Give the surface a good cleaning and scraping to remove any poorly adhered paint or stains — it's going to come off anyway. If the majority of the existing paint or stain is still well-bonded, apply a coat of our wood deck primer right over it, then apply the Renew It Deck Coating or Super Deck Paint on top. Make sure your deck is as clean as possible to ensure proper bonding.

New wood: Should be lightly/quickly sanded first to remove "mill glaze" — the smooth, sealed surface left by the sawmill that prevents coatings from penetrating and bonding properly.

The goal is a clean, sound surface. Whether your deck is new, weathered, or previously painted, proper preparation is what ensures your ArmorGarage deck coating bonds permanently and delivers the long-lasting results these products are engineered for.
