Why Standard Epoxy Fails Against Chemicals
Acid and chemical spills can rapidly damage any concrete floor lacking proper protection. The image below shows the difference: the left side is coated with a standard
"heavy-duty" 100% solids epoxy, while the right side uses ArmorGarage Acid Shield.
The standard epoxy side has developed yellowing and exposed aggregate as caustic chemicals eat away at the concrete. In contrast, the Acid Shield system remains unaffected under the same exposure conditions.
If left improperly protected, the damaged slab will eventually require removal and replacement — a far more costly outcome than coating it correctly from the start.
While Acid Shield has a slightly higher upfront cost, it is significantly more economical long-term by eliminating downtime, recoating, and slab replacement.
Acid Shield Epoxy Systems
We've done extensive research and field testing to ensure that when you choose an ArmorGarage Acid Shield epoxy coating, you're getting the highest corrosion protection possible. ArmorGarage Acid Shield epoxies are 100% Novolac epoxy — not a blend. Using water-based or standard floor epoxies in chemical environments can cause premature floor failure and costly downtime.
As with all our products, these systems are packaged for easy DIY installation — no prior experience needed.
Use the Acid Resistance Guide before buying: chemical exposure duration matters (splash vs long-term immersion). Selecting the wrong system is a guaranteed waste of time and money.
Heavy Duty Acid Shield
Our most popular system because it's resistant to hundreds of acids and chemicals, waterproof, food safe, and withstands thousands of hot caustic wash downs without losing finish.
- 96% solids • 25 mils thick
- Shore D 88 (hard hat reference ~75–80)
- 20mg abrasion loss • Compressive Strength 9,900 PSI
- Rated for heavy forklift traffic, heavy cart/foot traffic, dropped parts and tools
- Sold as a complete system: Novolac epoxy primer + Novolac epoxy topcoat
Standard Acid Shield
Designed for floors that are exposed to less caustic chemicals and acids such as in battery charging areas for electric golf carts and forklifts with a Shore D Hardness rating of 85.
Also great for maintenance and storage areas where chemical corrosion risk is present.
Heavy Duty Vertical Wall Acid Epoxy Shield
Form a complete protective shield from the floor right up to your ceiling. Extra-thick epoxy designed for vertical application without running or dripping like floor epoxy will. This coating is equal to the protection
level of our heavy-duty Novolac floor system, but in a vertical formulation.
AG Mortar Shield
A unique Novolac epoxy mortar for major repairs to floors that have suffered acid corrosion damage and other heavy damage. Use this to rebuild damaged areas before applying an Acid Shield topcoat system.

Bund & Containment Flooring
A bund is a secondary containment area — a walled or raised perimeter surrounding tanks, drums, and equipment that store hazardous liquids such as chemicals, fuels, and industrial solvents. When a tank leaks or a spill occurs, the bund catches everything. But only if the flooring within that containment zone is properly sealed.
Standard concrete and basic epoxy coatings will absorb and allow chemicals to penetrate through to the sub-slab, contaminating soil and groundwater — creating environmental liability and costly remediation. ArmorGarage Acid Shield creates a seamless, waterproof, chemically impervious barrier across your entire bund area, ensuring full containment compliance.
Common bund & containment applications: chemical storage facilities, fuel and petroleum depots, pharmaceutical plants, wastewater treatment areas, hazardous material warehouses, and any facility where environmental regulations require secondary spill containment.
Regulatory compliance matters: Many EPA, OSHA, and local environmental regulations require chemically resistant secondary containment flooring. ArmorGarage Acid Shield systems are 100% Novolac epoxy — engineered to meet the most demanding containment requirements. Contact us with your specific chemical exposure list and we'll confirm the right system for your facility.
Semiconductor & Fabrication Facility Flooring
Semiconductor fabrication facilities (Fabs) operate in some of the most chemically aggressive environments in any industry. Floors are continuously exposed to hydrofluoric acid (HF), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), ammonium hydroxide, and other highly corrosive compounds across wet benches, etch bays, CMP areas, and wastewater systems.
Standard epoxy coatings are not designed for this level of exposure. Repeated chemical contact and daily wash-down cycles break down conventional coatings in months, leading to surface erosion, exposed concrete, contamination risk, and unplanned shutdowns for repair.
ArmorGarage Acid Shield is a 100% Novolac epoxy system engineered specifically for continuous chemical exposure. It forms a dense, cross-linked barrier that resists both surface attack and chemical penetration, maintaining integrity under repeated acid exposure and high-frequency wash-down conditions.
Typical Fab applications: wet etch stations, CMP rooms, chemical storage areas, wastewater neutralization systems, chemical delivery corridors, and sub-fab mechanical spaces.
Match system to exposure conditions: Chemical concentration and exposure time vary by Fab zone. Use our

How To Know How Durable An Epoxy Coating Is
Two specifications tell you everything you need to know about how an epoxy coating will hold up: Abrasion Loss Rating and Shore D Hardness. Buy based on performance specs, not name or price.
Abrasion Loss Rating (Taber C-17)
Abrasion resistance is what keeps epoxy from dulling and wearing off. The Taber C-17 test uses a weighted abrasion wheel at a controlled RPM and duration, then measures how many mgs of material are removed. Lower mg loss = more durable coating.
25+ mg
Residential Grade
10–20 mg
Heavy Commercial
5–10 mg
Industrial Grade
< 5 mg
Military Grade
Shore D Hardness
Shore D measures scratch and scuff resistance. For reference, hard hats measure around 80 Shore D. Any rating near that is excellent — anything above is superior.
Rule of thumb: Always choose a coating rated higher than your traffic demands. Over-rating is safer than under-rating.
Acid Shield Epoxy Questions
What makes Novolac epoxy different from standard epoxy?
Novolac epoxy uses a different resin chemistry that creates a much denser cross-linked molecular structure. This makes it highly resistant to chemical attack, heat, and acid penetration. Standard epoxies — even "heavy duty" ones — break down rapidly under chemical exposure. ArmorGarage Acid Shield products are 100% Novolac, not a blend.
How do I know which Acid Shield system I need?
Download our
Acid Resistance Guide (300+ chemicals) and look up the specific chemicals your floor will be exposed to. Exposure duration matters — splash exposure vs long-term immersion require different systems. If you don't see your chemical listed, call us and we'll have a chemist review suitability.
Can I install Acid Shield epoxy myself?
Yes. Like all ArmorGarage epoxy systems, Acid Shield products are packaged as complete DIY-friendly kits with clear instructions and all materials included. No prior experience needed. We provide free 7-day/wk phone and email support before, during, and after your project.
Is Acid Shield suitable for bund and containment areas?
Yes. ArmorGarage Acid Shield creates a seamless, waterproof, chemically impervious barrier — exactly what secondary containment zones require. Our 100% Novolac epoxy resists hundreds of chemicals at both splash and immersion levels, helping facilities meet EPA, OSHA, and local environmental containment regulations.
Can Acid Shield handle semiconductor Fab environments?
Absolutely. Semiconductor Fabs expose floors to hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide, ammonium hydroxide, and other highly corrosive chemicals on a daily basis.
