If adding color flakes, the flakes displace some of the epoxy, so if you're starting off with a thin layer it gets thinner under the flakes. It's why many epoxies suffer from hot tire lifting, they don't have the critical mass to absorb the heat of your tires.  Remember we are talking about coatings and even though our epoxy systems are among the thickest there are, they're still thin when compared to the physical material world as they're measured in mils versus millimeters, big difference. A thicker epoxy coating provides extra impact resistance and durability, protecting against scratches, abrasion, and daily use. Suffice it to say thicker is just better.

For example, in a home garage, you may only need enough thickness to handle cars with light traffic. But for a warehouse or commercial kitchen, the floor must withstand forklifts, heavy carts, and constant cleaning, requiring a much  thicker epoxy floor. If you’re using color flakes in your garage epoxy you want a thick epoxy  for the flakes to embed into. Thin water based epoxies get thinner when the flakes embed themselves leaving a very thin layer on the concrete which  can reliquefy under hot tires and then resolidify onto your tires when it cools back down. Then the next time you pull your car out of your garage part of your new epoxy floor will be going along for the ride. How Thick Is Epoxy Flooring on Average?

The thickness of an epoxy floor varies based on the type of system. Here’s a general guideline:

  • Thin epoxy coating: About 2-4 mils. Usually, water-based products that are for light-duty decorative finishes with foot traffic only.
  • Standard garage floor epoxy: Around 5-9 mils. Good for short-term light residential garage usage.
  • Heavy-duty epoxy systems: 20-35 mils. These are used for multi-decade usage in garages and for heavy commercial or industrial spaces, often combined with epoxy aggregates for added strength.

Keep in mind that one mil = 1/1000th of an inch. So when you read “20 mils,” that’s only about half a millimeter thick, which is very thick in the paint world. As an example, oil-based enamels are only 2 mils thick.

How Thick Can You Pour Epoxy?

Another common question is: How thick can epoxy be poured at one time? For standard applications, epoxy coatings are applied in layers rather than a single thick pour. Why? Because applying too much at once can lead to very rapid and improper curing. Our 100% solids epoxy systems can be applied much thicker than water-based coatings, but even then, the process involves multiple layers of primer, epoxy, and topcoat to achieve the desired build. With each layer playing a specific role, the primer's job is to penetrate the open pores in the slab that you create during your floor prep, and then lock into those pores forming an unbreakable bond. The epoxy's job is to form the sturcural strength of the epoxy system, thick of it as the concrete foundation. Then the topcoat's job is to provide UV stability and abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, stain resistance and finally a super high gloss finish. As opposed to a polyurea which is a single component product that does all of the above in one product and is why they are not as good as high quality epoxy systems.
