Surface Bond Asphalt & Concrete Coating

Tired of black asphalt or pedestrian gray concrete? Surface Bond delivers designer color, fast cure, low odor, and industrial durability for driveways, plazas, malls, pool decks, walkways, bike lanes, parking garages, and more.

Beautiful Color + Serious Protection

Surface Bond works on new or old concrete (patterned or flat) and new or old asphalt. It’s ideal for stamped concrete and lasts far longer than typical stains that wear quickly. It’s also a major upgrade over traditional asphalt emulsion coatings that can be smelly, contain high levels of PAHs, and wear off fast.

It cures in just a few hours for same-day or next-day full service. For public commercial areas, downtime and odor matter — Surface Bond solves both while delivering best-in-class durability.

LOW VOC • Almost zero odor UV stable Fast back-in-service Works on slopes Not a latex product
Easy to apply with no prior experience needed: rolls on like paint, but delivers dramatically higher performance and lifespan. Uses nanotechnology bonding agents for strong adhesion and long life. Flexible for wide temperature swings and easily recoatable later with standard cleaning.

Each kit includes Part A (in a 5-gallon pail for mixing), Part B activator, and a liquid color tint (your choice). Pour all three into the supplied pail to yield 4 mixed gallons, mix with a mud mixer, and apply by roller or spray. Long working time + fast cure makes it ideal for projects where speed matters.

Textured Walkway Example

Textured Surface Bond coating on outdoor walkway
Coverage: ~275 sq ft per pail. Minimum two coats required. First coat covers less due to absorption; additional coats cover more after sealing. Up to five coats can be applied for maximum life.

Stamped Concrete Done in Tile Red

Stamped concrete coated in Tile Red (brick pattern)

Two coats are the minimum; more coats increase durability and lifespan. We also offer walkway & bike lane greens in two shades designed for high-mileage traffic.

Primer guidance: Primer is not required for standard new or good-condition asphalt, but degraded/older asphalt must use Surface Bond primer. Primer is not required for concrete (optional to increase adhesion). Primer coverage is ~200–300 sq ft per gallon and applies blue (dries clear). Once dry to the touch (about 60–90 minutes) with no fingerprint, apply Surface Bond.
If using primer: primer has a different coverage rate than the coating. Determine primer pails first, subtract from total pails needed, add those Surface Bond pails (without primer) to cart, then “continue shopping” and order remaining Surface Bond pails with primer.
Need fast project pricing or volume discounts? We can help you spec coats, coverage, and primer.

Please note that these are the base colors and many different additional colors can be made by mixing various base colors together.

Coverage will vary according to type of surface, texture of surface and age of surface. Coverage will average about 275 sf/ 4 gal pail. If using the textured roller figure 225 sf/4 gal pail. Coverage may vary depending on surface texture, condition, porosity and application thickness.

We recommend two coats for pedestrian traffic and light vehicle traffic, three coats for heavy vehicle traffic such as commercial parking areas or public roadways and traffic crossings. Goes on at an average of 9 mils per coat dried film thickness. Up to five coats can be applied!

Surface Bond Application Instructions
1

Surface Preparation

Surface must be clean and completely dry before application. For asphalt, a good leaf blower and stiff-bristled broom is normally all that's needed โ€” vigorously broom the surface to loosen dirt, then blow it away.

For very dirty or large surfaces, power wash and allow sufficient drying time. If vehicle fluids are present in the surface, they must be removed. Oil stains can be scrubbed out with Liquid Tide and muriatic acid, then thoroughly rinsed. Allow the surface to dry completely.

Concrete surfaces: Concrete must be 28 days or older. All concrete must be acid washed โ€” mix 1 gallon muriatic acid with 3 gallons water per 300 sq ft. Wet surface, scrub in diluted acid with a stiff resin broom or pool brush, let sit 5โ€“6 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Neutralize with 1 lb TSP powder per 1,000 sq ft as a final rinse. Allow to dry to the touch.
2

Check Weather Conditions

Temperature must remain above 50ยฐF for a minimum of 4 hours after you finish application. No rain is allowed for 24 hours after application.

3

Primer (If Needed)

For asphalt surfaces, use Surface Bond Primer unless the asphalt is new and stable. Apply Surface Bond after primer is dry to the touch โ€” about 45 minutes.

For concrete, bricks, or pavers, primer isn't required but is recommended to increase adhesion. If coating over stamped concrete, use a ยฝ"โ€“ยพ" nap roller.

4

Mix the Coating

Surface Bond is a one-component product. Add 1 pint of color per 5-gallon unit. Mix with the Surface Bond metal mixer for 3โ€“4 minutes to ensure color is evenly distributed.

Hot weather tip: If applying in very hot temperatures, you may add a small amount of water to thin the coating and extend working time.
5

Apply the Coating

Application method is the same for asphalt and concrete. Once thoroughly mixed, roll on with 3/8" lint-free rollers, or use the Surface Bond roller for an orange-peel textured finish. The coating can also be applied with a flat squeegee, sprayed, or broomed โ€” depending on the surface.

Surface TypeBest Method
Smooth asphalt or concreteRoll on with 3/8" lint-free roller
Rough textured asphaltSqueegee to spread, then back-roll to even out
Stamped concreteSpray and broom, or squeegee and broom
Bricks and paversSpray while a second person brooms into the pattern

Maintain the recommended coverage rate regardless of application method.

6

Recoat & Finish

Allow each coat to dry fully to the touch before applying the next. Recoat time is 30โ€“45 minutes. Dry time for the final coat is 1โ€“3 hours depending on temperature and humidity.

Roll or spray the second coat perpendicular to the first coat โ€” this ensures a more even finish. When spraying over a patterned surface, use a broom to work the coating in and distribute it evenly. The final coat on a non-patterned surface can be sprayed and rolled instead of broomed.

โš  DO NOT apply to asphalt or concrete that has been sealed unless the sealer is completely removed. If water sprinkled on the surface beads up or doesn't absorb within a few seconds, the surface has been sealed and must be stripped before coating.

Surface Bond requires little to no maintenance. Normal clean up can be done with a garden hose and a product such as Simple Green if needed to remove heavily soiled spots. TSP can be used to remove oil & grease stains. For municipal streets, street cleaners must have nylon rotary brushes. Power washing is ok, use no more than 2000psi. Gum may be removed by first freezing it and then chipping off.

When Surface Bond needs to be recoated it can be done at anytime, just clean and dry the surface and reapply. If concrete stamping has worn out then restamp prior to reapplication of Surface Bond.

During Fall foliage season care should be taken to remove leaves before they start to decompose. Lighter color leaves left on surface for extended periods of time can cause staining on any coating.
