Coverage & Application

Each 4-gallon pail provides:

• Two coats at approximately 1/8" thickness

• Up to 150 sq ft coverage with two coats (depending on surface texture, age, and condition)

For older decks with dry wood and deep cracks: Add minimum 20% to your square footage as a safety factor for crack filling and absorption. Filling in cracks & divots and locking down splinters requires more material.

Required tools: Order 1 Renew It roller for every 8 gallons (2 pails) of coating. Our special rollers are required for proper application.

Note: This product is made in batches that may vary slightly in color. Order sufficient quantity for your entire project. Color variance can be corrected with one coat of smooth version if needed.

PRIMER REQUIRED FOR ALL WOOD APPLICATIONS

Primer ensures proper bond to bare wood or previously painted/stained surfaces. This saves you the time and effort of having to fully strip your wood surfaces. Eliminates the need to sand your wood deck boards!

Coverage: Use One Renew It Wood Primer - per 12 gallons of coating. See Related Products below.

Composite/Trex: Use Flash Bond Bonding Primer instead of standard wood primer. See application instructions for details.

How to Apply Armor Renew It Deck Coating

Complete prep and application guide for wood decks, docks, and concrete surfacesβ€”from surface preparation through final coat

Works on Wood & Concrete
Coat Over Old Stain or Paint
Apply in Direct Sunlight
No Sanding Required
1

Prepare the Surface

Renew It Deck Coating should be applied to clean, dry wood or concrete. The prep approach depends on your surface condition:

Wood Decks & Docks

If your deck has been previously stained or painted, scrape it down to remove all loose material. Loose coatings can delaminate later, causing the Renew It finish to peel with them. Power washing is an excellent way to clean your deck and strip away loose coatings in one step.

Good News β€” No Sanding Required: On previously painted or stained wood, you can coat right over the old finish once loose material is removed, thanks to our Renew It Primer. The primer eliminates the need to sand your entire deck. Sanding or scraping is only needed to remove material that's already peeling or flaking. If sanding old paint, always use a respirator!

The Renew It coating is thick enough to fill in the voids between areas where old paint was removed and areas where it's still adheredβ€”so don't worry about getting a perfectly uniform surface during prep.

Note on Sealers: Some sealers are tough to bond to. The good news is they're mostly low-quality residential-grade products that are easily removedβ€”or in many cases are already removing themselves. A good power wash will strip most sealers and give the primer a clean profile to grip.

Concrete Surfaces

Same concept as wood, but you must acid etch the concrete with muriatic acid. Scrub in a mixture of 3 gallons of water to 1 gallon of acid, let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse well. A power wash rinse works best.

Critical Drying Time: Once all dirt, loose coatings, mold, and mildew are removed, let the deck dry for a full 48 hours. Wood that hasn't completely dried can outgas during application, causing bubbles to form in the finished surface.

2

Apply the Renew It Primer

Once the surface is clean and dry, prime with Renew It Primer at a rate of 400–500 sq ft per gallon. Roll the primer on with a standard 3/8" nap roller. Let it dry to the touch (usually a few hours) before moving on to the first coat of Renew It.

Storing Leftover Primer: If you're not using all the primer at once, it's critical to keep air out of the can until you're ready to reuse it. Either press plastic wrap down onto the liquid surface before replacing the lid, or transfer the remaining primer to a smaller container with minimal air space.

3

Apply the First Coat of Renew It

Stir the Renew It contents as you would regular paint, pour into a roller pan, and load our special roller fully with product. Roll out slowly and evenly in one direction with medium downward pressure. When the roller runs out of product, lift it up and reloadβ€”do not roll backwards or to the sides.

  • Use Our Roller Only: The only way to properly apply this product is with our Renew It Deck Roller. There is no product support or guarantee without it. Order one roller per every 200 sq ft of surface.
  • Want Less Texture? Brush in the opposite direction of rolling to smooth the coating out. Do not brush back and forth.
  • Cutting In: Use a standard paint brush for edges, railings, and other hard-to-reach areas.
  • Between Boards: After every 2–3 boards, use a putty knife or similar tool to remove excess material between the boards.

Fill Cracks as You Go: Make sure all cracks, chips, and splintered areas are filled in during the first coat. If cracks are still visible after it dries, use a brush to fill them with extra material before applying the second coat. For large or deep cracks, use a non-silicone filler such as acrylic-compatible caulking, Bondo, or paintable wood putty.

Rusty Fasteners? If your deck was assembled with untreated nails or screws, coat them with a paintable rust-inhibiting primer before applying Renew It Primer. This prevents rust from bleeding up through the finished coating.

The first coat may appear blotchyβ€”this is completely normal and simply means the wood is absorbing the product. The second coat will take care of it.

This is how the coating should look as you roll it out in one direction

4

Apply the Second Coat

Let the first coat dry for approximately four hours or until completely dry to the touch, then apply the second coat. This coat should completely encapsulate the woodβ€”you should not see any bare wood or blotchy spots without the aggregate texture. If you do, it means the first coat was applied too thin or the wood was extremely dry.

You're Done! When the second coat dries hard to the touch, your deck is ready for foot traffic. Keep furniture off the coating for 3–4 days to allow full cure. Rinse the rollers with water between coats.

Weather & Application Conditions

Renew It can be applied in direct sunlight. For the best results, apply when temperatures are below 90Β°F and avoid the peak midday sun when possible. You can dilute Renew It with a small amount of water if it's applying too thick in the heat.

  • Do not apply if rain is forecast within 24 hours of application
  • Do not apply below 40Β°F or if temps will drop below 40Β°F within 48 hours
  • Do not apply to surfaces that don't drain properly and hold water in puddles for more than 24 hours

After Application: Care & Furniture Tips

  • Wait 3–4 Days: Keep furniture off the new coating for 3–4 days to allow a full cure
  • Furniture Pads: All furniture legs and bottoms should have proper plastic or wood inserts to protect the surface
  • No Raw Metal Contact: Never scrape or drag raw metal edges across your new coating

Questions About Your Deck Project?

Every deck is differentβ€”if you're unsure about your surface condition, prep requirements, or application approach, we're here to help.

Talk to an expert at 866-532-3979 β€” info@armorgarage.com or Request a Quote for project pricing. Be sure to order the Renew It Deck Roller for proper applicationβ€”one roller per every 200 sq ft of surface.

Q: What is the coverage and how thick can it be applied?

A: Coverage is up to 75 sq ft/gal and you need to do two coats, so each 4 gallon pail will cover up to 150 sf with two coats. Finished coating will be about 1/8" thick and you can fill in cracks and divots up to 3/8" deep.

Remember though that the thicker you apply it and the more cracks and divots you fill in, the less coverage you will get. Coverage will vary depending on type of wood, age, and dryness of your deck when you restore it.

We recommend you use an average of 65-75 sf/gal per coat. If your deck is older and therefore drier with a lot of cracks you should use a number closer to 50-55sf/gal. If newer you can use a number closer to 75 sf/gal.

Coverage is not an exact science when it comes to decks so please do not order to the exact square footage of your deck. We strongly suggest ordering extra material as a safety margin, especially if your wood is older and dried out or your concrete has a rougher type finish. Any leftover can be stored in small containers for any emergency touch ups needed.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ARMOR RENEW IT IS MADE IN BATCHES. COLORS MAY VARY FROM BATCH TO BATCH SO PLEASE MAKE SURE TO ORDER ENOUGH MATERIAL FOR YOUR ENTIRE PROJECT SINCE REORDERS MAY SHOW COLOR VARIATIONS. (If this color shift does occur, it can be corrected by putting on a coat of the Smooth Version over the entire surface)

Why Most Wood Deck Coatings End Up in Pieces on Your Lawn

Traditional porch & deck enamels can’t seal wood 100%. Moisture gets in from the underside and through tiny cracks, then forces its way back out β€” cracking and peeling rigid coatings as it expands, evaporates, and freezes.

Moisture Intrusion Freeze / Thaw Pressure Breathability Matters End the Strip & Paint Cycle

What’s Actually Causing the Peeling

  • 1
Wood can’t be sealed perfectly Moisture sneaks in from the unpainted underside, and through small pinholes, cracks, and gaps in older coatings.
  • 2
Moisture migrates upward Once inside, it naturally moves toward the surface of the deck/porch boards.
  • 3
Pressure builds under rigid paint films On hot sunny days moisture tries to evaporate out; in winter it can freeze and expand. That pressure pushes up through non-flexible, non-breathing enamels.
  • 4
Result: cracks, chips, and sheets of paint The coating fractures, opens up, and peels off β€” which is why decks often spend more time stripped than protected.
Want a coating designed to breathe and stay bonded instead of cracking?

Why Renew It Is Different

We get asked every day what makes this different than the deck products found in home improvement stores β€” or even our own Super Duty Deck Paint.

Typical Deck Paint

  • Starts as a liquid and dries to a thin film
  • Less texture / less build per coat
  • More prone to cracking when moisture pushes upward

Renew It Coating

  • Starts as a solid that’s liquified, then returns to a solid when cured
  • Rock hard, textured, thick protective build
  • Industrial-grade strength with no cheap chemical fillers
  • Allows wood to breathe so trapped moisture can escape

Renew It is designed to end the stripping and painting cycle by letting moisture escape instead of rupturing the coating.

Expected service life: While no coating lasts forever, Renew It typically provides about 7–10 years of good service. When it eventually fades and wears down from sun and weather, you simply roll on a single coat to refresh it.

Critical Notes (Read Before Ordering)

  • All wood decks must be primed first with Renew It Primer. Primer coverage: ~450 SF per gallon. Order separately (see Related Products).
  • Use of a Renew It roller is required for proper application. This product cannot be sprayed.
  • Improper application can cause product failure and is not covered under warranty.
  • Do not apply to decks with standing water lasting more than 24 hours or improper drainage.
  • Warranty applies to coating on properly prepared and suitable wood and/or concrete.
  • Warranty: 2-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects, limited to replacement of defective product only. No other guarantees/warranties are expressed for consequential damages.
